A birthday Falconry experience

This is a bit of a local post, and slightly off topic, so apologies if its not your 'thing'.

It was my wife's birthday this weekend, and one of the things she has been interested in doing was Falconry. She is quite an 'animal' person, and spending time with some more exotic birds has always been on her wish list.

I had a search around and found a local Falconry center, 'Fray Falconry services' at the Chiseldon House Hotel. ( http://www.chiseldonhousehotel.co.uk/aboutus_frayfalconry.php )

The owner Frank Hunt gave both myself and my wife a great session learning about and handling the birds he had on site. It was a real privilege to get close to, and see these great animals flying.

If you are in the area and you fancy a Falconry experience I highly recommend Fray Falconry. Frank knows his stuff, and has an infectious enthusiasm for the subject which really adds to the experience.

Creating and using a custom short URL with bit.ly

Most of us are familiar with short URL's now. They are a pretty standard feature online now. What is becoming more popular is having a custom URL for your own links. Instead of posting short URL's that contain the name of the service provider, you can create a short link that has your own custom short format.

Daily Dilbert RIAforge project release 1.0

I'm a great fan of the Dilbert cartoon series, so I've put together a little application to go and get the Daily Dilbert cartoon strip from the Dilbert website.

It's a simply cfc call that will get today's Dilbert cartoon and save it to a path the user has defined and passed in as an argument.

Let me know if you use it, or think of any ways of to extend it.

It is also one of the first tests I was set as a trainee 10+ years ago, so was quite an interesting comparison to write it again.

You can download it from RIAforge here: http://dilbert.riaforge.org/

It is all about the punctuation

More and more recently I find myself writing documentation rather than code. I'm referring to real business documentation, rather than docs about technology.

I've noticed more and more that in documents its often not what you say, but the manner in which you say it. I'm sure there are dozens of best practices for writing good business documents, things like keeping it succinct or not too flowery or overly wordy.

One thing I have noticed is that my punctuation is mediocre at best. After mentioning this to a colleague he sent me the text below.
